2020 NWTS Schedule

Friday – March 6th

10AM – 1PM – Keynote Presentation with Rachel Pollack

TAROT AS A MEDIUM—READINGS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE DEAD

Rachel Pollack – 2020 Keynote Speaker – Northwest Tarot Symposium

Relationship spreads are among the most popular—and powerful ways we use the cards.  Often, people want them to reveal secrets—“Is my boyfriend cheating on me?”—or predict the future—“Will my lover propose when we go away for a trip?”  Such answers can be very important, especially when making a decision.  But we also can use the cards to explore relationships rather than define them.

What does each person give in the relationship?  What do they share and what do they hold back?  What do they want?  What do they need?  Rachel has explored such readings for many years.  Now she is extending this work in an exciting new way—looking at relationships with people close to us who have died.

Just as most readings are assumed to make predictions, so the standard view of mediumship follows a set pattern.  First, the medium proves they’re genuine by revealing something very private—“Aunt Sophie asks if you remember the toy dinosaur she gave you when you had your tonsils out?”  Then a message—“Mason wants you to know he forgives you for the accident.”

As impressive, and often comforting as these moments can be, we can use the cards to go more deeply.  Rachel does not claim to be a medium.  Instead, she trusts the cards for awareness and understanding—and the truth that our relationships do not have to end when a person dies.

Note: This is the Friday Keynote Extension. You will need a special ticket to enter this presentation.

Rachel Pollack is the multi-award winning author of 43 books, including the Tarot classic, Seventy-Eight Degrees Of Wisdom, now in its third edition and in print continuously since 1980.  Her work has been translated into 16 languages and is sold around the world.  Rachel has taught Tarot in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Europe, Israel, New Zealand, Australia, and China.

Throw Your Cards: Reading the Tarot Organically

Tarot cards—they’re like spring-feverish schoolkids sometimes, flipping off tables and slipping out of our hands. That’s their inherent wildness, the potency flowing through, with more to say and mean than our rules give them space for. So instead of being a stickler for seat assignments, why not use that energy? If you and your cards are catastrophically bored of the Celtic Cross, then forget your spreads—throw them down instead. When we let the cards arrange themselves, they can pass on messages we never even thought of looking for. We’ll play around with interpreting layouts, and practice ways to give your cards room to strut their stuff. Trust them with their freedom, and they’ll dig deep for those insights that perfect rows can hide.

Reared and taught by many lands of the Pacific Northwest, Alex Tinder pursues the calls of wild justice, community care and sacred disruption. He is the creator of the forthcoming “Primal Tarot”, a fifteen year project of cutting the deck free from the cathedral and throne, releasing it to the wilds to turn feral. Too stubborn to do it anyone else’s way, Alex’s missteps, or should we say experiments, in learning to read cards allowed him to develop his methods of spread-free interpretation.

Friday 5PM

Mapping Your Dream Quest & Ritual Quest using Divination

Learn to use all different types of divination methods to assist you in remembering dreams, lucid dreaming and ritual evocation work. We will also briefly discuss setting up Dream Altars and Dream Magick.
Please bring your preferred divination tool with you (Runes, Tarot Cards, Oghams, Oracle Cards, Lenormand, Runes, I Ching etc.) to this work shop, as well as any dream journals, to help in participation exercises.

Raven says, “I feel like I was born into this existence as a Dreamer. The first three memories I have are from childhood dreams instead of waking life. Before I even could even write in a dream journal, I would keep personal art of my dreams in a box by my bed. I recall we had to do an invention project (if you could invent anything and it would work) in the 2nd grade and I chose a dream box that recorded dreams. Because of this passion for dreams, I have always worked in the Metaphysical Community as much as possible, starting with divining with my Runes at outdoor markets in my teen age years, and then advancing into haunting investigations and studying various forms of divination and belief systems, and now coordinating workshops and Shamanic Dream Time Excavations (Journeys) for others.

I incorporate divination in a unique way to assist in evocation rituals and Dream Work, whether Tarot, Runes, Oracle Cards…what have you. I have used this advanced method to help other’s to recollect their Dream Time and to empower their ritual work and Spiritual Quest.”

Friday 5PM

Working with the Triads and Septads in the Major Arcana

The Major Arcana, as a series of 21 cards (the Fool is not numbered, so He’s not part of the 21), conveniently sorts itself into three sets of seven cards, or seven sets of three cards. Three and seven are considered magical numbers in many traditions, and Oswald Wirth had a field day with them. We’ll hear what Mr. Wirth had to say, we’ll share our own ideas, then lay out the cards in various combinations of threes and sevens, and see what we can discover about their meanings and relationships. Please come with two decks: one in order, and one randomly shuffled.

Anastasia Haysler is based in San Francisco, California, where she teaches and writes about Runes, Tarot, the Gods, and other topics which catch her interest. She runs Tarot Media Company and Black Swan Press, providing mainstream distribution and publication of works by authors, artists, and scholars of special cultural interest.

Her published works to date include Painting the Soul: The Tarot Art of David Palladini, written in cooperation from David himself, and the DVD “21st Century Tarot“, with James Wanless, Ph.D., creator of the Voyager Tarot. She comments on Tarot, Runes, divination, and life in general on her blog at www.WalkingInTheIronWood.com.

Tarot for the New Age: Five pillars for spiritual leadership

Tarot’s popularity is sky-rocketing these days. But like anything that becomes a trend, tarot can be at risk of being misused, misrepresented, or misunderstood. How do we preserve the integrity of tarot as a spiritual practice in a time when instant gratification and internet memes distract and dilute the commitment and responsibility that tarot requires? This isn’t to say tarot can’t be fun or light-hearted – it’s a good thing that people are interested in it. But, for those of us using tarot as a tool to help, heal, and guide others, it’s imperative that we establish clear ethics, boundaries, and understandings of what it means to use tarot responsibly.

Spiritual leadership is something we can all be accountable for and now is the time for us, as tarot readers, to lead the way in ensuring that tarot helps more than it harms. Join Liz Worth as she takes you through five pillars for spiritual leadership, which include: Empowerment, experience, discipline, commitment, and objectivity. Learn how to check personal biases, avoid spiritual bypassing, and serve your community in a way that aligns with your highest integrity. Open to tarot readers of all levels, this class will raise your awareness of what it takes to be a responsible tarot reader and blaze a trail into this new New Age.

Liz Worth is a tarot reader, astrologer and author based in Toronto. She believes that tarot can help us gain clarity and control over our lives. She is the author of The Power of Tarot and Going Beyond the Little White Book: A Contemporary Guide to Tarot, and is also a published poet and novelist.

Saturday 10:45AM

Ask Better Questions, Get Better Answers

A great reading involves many elements and one of the most important elements is a solid, clear question. For new readers and for clients, this can be a daunting hurdle… but the good news is that it is totally something that anyone can improve! Isn’t funny how something so simple can seem so difficult? And yet, once it’s no longer such a big issue, the guidance can flow so much easier in a reading. In this session, we will cover a meditative process that helps you to remove your assumptions, your ego, and your will to hear what you want to hear. We will clear the way to an open and safe space where you are able to receive what you *need* to know. This method can be used to improve readings with clients as well, who often need coaching through their awareness and discovery process during a reading.

Ginger is an entrepreneur and metaphysical practitioner who started out in the logical world as a technologist, librarian, and archivist. Her natural ability to translate the practical and academic world to the universal connection of metaphysics, and vice-versa, enables her to help fellow metaphysicians learn how to build a bridge between what they envision, and the reality of  manifesting their gifts into a profitable reality.

When not providing readings, she works with small groups and business entrepreneurs through coaching, teaching, and managing their digital information through holistic approaches. www.SensibleWoo.com

The Tarot Comes To Life

Reading the images as a story line is a basic tool most of us use. But what if there was a way to open a dialog between the cards that goes goes beyond a story-line and develops them into a a stage play?!

You’ll be surprised how a card’s image can be friendly to a card 2 to the left and a bully to the one right next to it at the same time! Card counting brings astrological values, Hebrew letters, and all 4 elements into a reading quickly and easily to add drama and depth to readings for your clients and yourself. Take a storyline to a three part play.

Callie is the artist of the Rana George Lenormand published by U. S. Games in 2017. This same publisher will be releasing a “Pride Tarot” in 2020, and Callie was honored by being selected to be the artist of two cards for this exciting deck because of her direct involvement with the LGBTQA+ community. As a self taught artist she has many projects that are currently under contract and in process coming out of her studio.

The Psychology of the Tarot Court: Using the MBTI to Understand Your Court Cards

Many Tarot readers have correlated the 16 Myers-Briggs types with the 16 cards of the Tarot Court. But different decks can have Court cards with different personalities–and therefore different MBTI types. In this workshop you will learn how the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory classifies personalities and identify the MBTI type of each of your Court cards. After you identify the MBTI types for your Court, group exercises will help you understand how the personalities of your Court–and clients you read for–need to adapt in order to work together effectively or to resolve conflicts.

Dennis has been active with tarot since 2009, using the Tarot to enrich his life and to help his clients deal with crises and opportunities, and their everyday lives. In addition to Tarot, he teaches yoga and does qigong energy balancing. Dennis is also a statistician who spent his professional career making sense of numbers. He learned how to create tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory when he earned his Educational Psychology PhD. Instead of statistics, now he uses Tarot to help his clients make sense of the life forces they face every day.

The 4 Great Stories of Tarot

We often speak in tarot of the Fool’s journey, the 22-card adventure story familiar to all. But in every tarot deck are hidden four other, epic stories, each tied to one of the four elements. By using tarot’s own elemental and astrological correspondences, we can weave together the minor and major arcana into mythic narratives that cast new light on our own heroic journeys. In this lecture presentation, I will tell each of the four stories in full, revealing how they play out in each of these 52 cards. In the process, you’ll learn to integrate each great story into your own lives and practice.

T. Susan Chang is the author of “Tarot Correspondences: Ancient Secrets for Everyday Readers”. With Mel Meleen, she is the co-author “The Fortune’s Wheelhouse Guide to Esoteric Tarot”, and the co-host of the Fortune’s Wheelhouse esoteric tarot podcast, which explores imagery and symbolism in the Rider-Waite-Smith, Thoth, and Tabula Mundi decks. Tarot, Talismans and Manifesting Magic

A Tarot reading can be a profound and moving experience, that inspires and sparks change. However, a reading can also be ephemeral, the insights gained can fade away if we don’t find a way to develop and sustain the discoveries that were made. We can add magic and power to our readings by combining them with a tangible object that embodies our hopes, goals and intentions.

This workshop will cover how to add lasting impact to a Tarot reading with the use of amulets, talismans and other magical objects You will explore a Tarot spread that enables you or your client to create an intention, affirmation or goal, and to seal intentions into a talisman, and you’ll take your own charged talisman home with you.

Lori Lytle provides mystical yet practical guidance with Tarot as Inner Goddess Tarot in Toronto. She is known for her compassionate, conversational and empowering approach to the cards, and her ability to help her clients connect deeply with their own Inner Goddess. She’s a solitary witch, a priestess, a diviner, a wedding officiant, and an introverted empath and has been reading Tarot for more than 25 years.

Lori holds two Masters degrees in Ancient History/Archaeology and Museum Studies. She runs the popular Toronto Tarot Circle Meetup group, and offers readings and Tarot classes internationally online. She blissfully spends a lot of her time in her golden home office with her cat, Willow. Lori is also a reverend with the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry. www.InnerGoddessTarot.com.

The class includes guided visualization, numerology, deck comparisons, journaling, and discussion to bring new meaning to the cards, and deeper insights for your clients.
